Why It Matters

Why a Chimney Liner Matters

Your chimney liner is a critical part of your home's safety system. It protects the chimney structure, keeps heat and gases contained, and helps your fireplace or heating appliance work properly.

A damaged or missing liner can let heat reach wood framing, let carbon monoxide escape and cause the masonry to break down from the inside.

A properly sized liner helps your stove or fireplace draft correctly. It keeps smoke moving up and out, and protects your chimney from costly damage.

What We Find on Inspections

Signs Your Chimney Liner May Need Attention

Liner damage is usually hidden inside the chimney. These are real images from our ChimScan® camera inspections.

Cracked Clay Tile Liner

Heat and freeze-thaw cycles crack clay tiles, letting heat and gases reach the chimney structure.

Missing Mortar Joints

Gaps between flue tiles let smoke, creosote and carbon monoxide escape into the masonry.

Unlined or Deteriorated Flue

Older chimneys may have no liner at all, leaving bare brick exposed to heat and acidic gases.

Cracks and Debris

Cracked tiles, debris and blockages restrict draft and can cause smoke to back up.

Other warning signs include corrosion or rust, smoke or draft problems and excessive creosote buildup. The only way to know for sure is a camera inspection.

Chimney Liner FAQs

Answers to common questions about chimney liners. Still have a question? Call us at 978-685-0609.

What is a chimney liner, and why do I need one?

A liner is the protective lining inside your flue. It carries smoke and gases out of your home and protects the chimney's masonry and nearby framing from heat.

How do I know if my liner needs repair or replacement?

Most liner damage can't be seen from the outside. A ChimScan® camera inspection shows cracks, gaps, corrosion and creosote inside the flue.

What types of liners do you install?

We install stainless steel liners. We also repair clay liners with HeatShield® when the tiles themselves are sound.

Can a clay liner be repaired instead of replaced?

Yes, if only the mortar joints are missing or eroded. Cracked or broken tiles need a new stainless steel liner.

Why do you recommend stainless steel?

It resists corrosion, works with wood, gas and oil, and carries a transferable manufacturer's lifetime warranty with annual maintenance. It's the better long-term choice for your home.

How long does a stainless steel liner last?

With annual inspections and sweeping, a stainless steel liner lasts for decades.

Do I need a new liner if I install a new stove or insert?

Often, yes. A liner sized to the appliance helps it draft properly and vent safely. We'll confirm during your inspection.

How much does a chimney liner cost?

It depends on your chimney's height, flue size, appliance and access. Your inspection gives you clear pricing for your chimney.

Can I install a chimney liner myself?

We don't recommend it. Correct sizing, insulation and connections matter for safety and code compliance.

How do I keep my liner and warranty in good shape?

Schedule an annual inspection and sweep. Our $300 annual warranty maintenance (inspection, ChimScan® and sweep) is available January–September.
